A Pair of Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For following Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.

A comprehensive search and rescue mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost sailing vessels transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search Operations Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of nine total personnel, according to a official statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Aid to the Island

The island nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are outfitted with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission stated.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is collaborating completely with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.
