A key creative force responsible for a legendary franchise has unveiled his return into game development. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on his previous work centered around reactive companion characters.
Unveiled during the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as an adventure game blending puzzles and platforming. Players control Gertie, a hero that subverts typical power fantasies. This central concept stemmed from a goal to rethink what it means to be a protagonist.
"What if you didn’t have traditional weapons? What if your character was somehow encumbered? An aging witch, for instance?" asked Straley. "This felt deeply interesting to question what makes a hero. Being a hero means overcoming challenges, including traits like dedication, resolve, and tenacity."
Although this project appears distinct visually, its groundbreaking system evolves from the character dynamics pioneered in The Last of Us. This whole endeavor sprang from a central inquiry: "How could one create an AI partner even more reactive and adaptive to the player?"
Your strange critter partner within this adventure is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a learning entity which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. First, it exhibits curiosity, potentially leading to silly antics. Next, it enters a playful state. In the end, it observes and assimilates comprehending the world's rules.
Such advanced AI seeks to generate a deeply personal experience. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story.
"Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns into this game, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The core appeal in this partnership lies in the fact that every person who plays are going to have different sparks and narrative unlike anyone else's."
This focus on emergent, character-driven storytelling, Coven of the Chicken Foot represents both an evolution and a significant shift from the director’s well-known franchises. The game is currently in development for Windows PC.
