Baby Review: A Sharp Depiction of Queer Brazilian Survivors Adrift in the System

Capturing the metropolitan unease and pulsating life of São Paulo, director Marcelo Caetano's bracing drama zooms in on those who exist on the margins of an ever-changing metropolis. Recently released from juvenile prison, 18-year-old Wellington (João Pedro Mariano) finds himself at a crossroads; deserted by his parents, the innocent young man seeks comfort in the arms of others.

On an evening out with his lively group of gay and non-binary friends, Wellington meets Ronaldo (actor Ricardo Teodoro), a muscular, charming hustler over double his age. Illuminated by the flickering glow of a XXX cinema, their introductory rendezvous is sensuous and erotic, with an edge of danger. Ronaldo swiftly initiates Wellington to the clandestine realm of the sex trade and selling drugs.

Now using the alias Baby, he engages in his paid liaisons with brash fearlessness and touching naivety.
