Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in the UK, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he hit the target. The second time he appeared in England, against the Black Cats weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. When he returned to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, as well. “Truly,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the forward says, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and a further journey to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a difficult season for the club, partially owing to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river flanked by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are unique and debuting in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.
He considered it hard enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his top-level debut in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to experience the peak of their lives.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but with every stage you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as something positive because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Especially after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
