Former FBI chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
The former director's attorney filed the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the proceedings thrown out for multiple factors including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was formally accused shortly after Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the court they aimed to present several legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully appointed to handle the legal matter.
The former director's legal matter was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from the former president after his examination into a different political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.
The former director appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.
Upon hearing to the judge recite his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.
The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was leading an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, the director sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against the candidate were never brought, causing criticism from Republicans as well.
The federal government claim Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he deceived the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.
Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, block and impede" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.
In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of acting like a "tyrant".
"My family and I have known for years that there are ramifications to challenging the former president," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."
These allegations against James Comey came after the former president shared on social media calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
