Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor stated when pressed about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

Newsom's time in office as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, using his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would expand Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has made him a target from critics.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on Fox News. Duffy disclosed plans to cut federal funds from the state and suggested revoking the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he said, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.

His administration noted that the federal government had renewed the individual's authorization on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had before indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a last month's release addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recently conducted survey found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Some time ago, the governor remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The idea that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, extraordinary," he said. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
