The Kansas City Chiefs issued a statement on Wednesday evening confirming they are aware of claims of abuse circulated in social media posts by a former girlfriend of player the athlete and were in communication with the league office.
The team did not mention Rice specifically in their statement and noted they would have “no further comment at this time”.
Allegations Shared on Social Media
The woman, who also did not mention Rice directly, shared a set of images on social media that appeared to show indicators of bodily harm. She stated the person involved was the father of her children, and it is known she has two children with Rice, whom the team selected in the second round.
No police reports were available in Overland Park, Kansas where the alleged abuse is said to have taken place.
The receiver was absent for the first six games of this NFL campaign due to an league-mandated ban for his involvement in instigating a multi-vehicle accident on a Dallas highway that left multiple people hurt. Rice was given 30 days in jail and five years’ probation after entering a guilty plea to felony charges.
Statistically, Rice concluded the year with 53 receptions for 571 receiving yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs went with a losing record and failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time in a decade.
