The gravest potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by experts, encompassing a scorching 4C rise in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea level. A separate possibility envisions a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy needs.

Plausible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These impacts, some of which are linked to critical climate thresholds, are considered as unlikely but plausible. The team stated that these models filled a gap in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are possible," stated the professor who oversaw the analysis. "Britain has been planning in the absence of the tools to test against catastrophic outcomes. We've now provided policymakers what they need to prepare for environmental results they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Possibilities

A second set of severe models sets out the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These suggest that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.

The likelihood of the extreme scenarios happening cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what measures will be enacted to address climate change and how the climate system will react. This analysis was described as similar to national security risk assessments or stress tests for the banking sector.
