A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
