The Year 2026 Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming seems uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Many of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.

When these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
