England have chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.
The England coach had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the probable decision.
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
