Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
